Inclement Weather Information

I would like to thank everyone for your patience and understanding during periods of inclement weather.  We always try to make the best decision on whether to have school or not based upon current weather conditions and the likelihood of severe weather.  If we error, and we do, we always try to error on the side of safety.

Several types of weather conditions play havoc with school schedules.  Most notably: fog, ice and snow.  Adding to unpredictable conditions can be rain/flooding and wind.

When severe weather strikes, I am out early in the morning checking road conditions.  Our maintenance staff is here on-site readying parking areas, sidewalks and building entrances.  Our school bus drivers are checking their route areas.

I try to make a decision on school as early as possible in the morning.  I need to have school bus drivers notified by 6:00 A.M.  Any later than 6:00 A.M. and we run the risk of missing a driver before they leave home.  A decision could be made later if weather conditions change or weather does not improve.

There are three types of changes to the school schedule we use:  a 90 minute delay in the morning; a two (2) hour early dismissal in the afternoon or a school closure (Weather Cancellation Plan).  All three (3) types of change to our school schedule are dictated by current weather conditions.  This could become confusing when we first go on a delay and then change to a closure for the day.  This decision will be made by 8:00 A.M., if possible. Again, these decisions are based upon weather/conditions and safety for all involved.

There are days when we will have school when conditions are not perfect.  Parents, please talk to your young drivers about using extreme caution and slowing down.  Driving defensively is your best protection in adverse driving conditions.

The Shenandoah messaging calls and texts are your best source of information.  SSC will also post our information on the SSC Website, Facebook and Twitter.

The media is your next best source for Shenandoah School Corporation weather information. Channels 6, 8, and 13 carry SSC information.  If you do not see SSC information on one channel, please check the others.  This information also appears on these stations’ websites under closings/delays.  We also contact local radio stations such as WLBC and WBST.

I hope this information is helpful.

Respectfully,

Kyle Barrentine
