Curriculum - What we Teach

Curriculum has gotten a lot of attention in the news lately, and unfortunately, it has become a bit of a political issue.

For many years, schools, and even individual teachers, had quite a bit of freedom regarding what they taught. However, beginning in the 1980's, politicians and leaders from business and education began to promote the idea that American Students, regardless of the state they live in, should have consistent learning standards for each grade level.

Over the last 40 years, politicians from both sides of the aisle have supported the idea of content standards. Because of this support, we have seen the passage of major bipartisan legislation that has resulted in all states creating and implementing content standards for the core subjects (in addition to standardized testing).

In Indiana, public school teachers are required to teach the Indiana Educator Content Standards. All of these are easily accessible to the public and can be found here. Our teachers are required to align their curriculum to these state standards, and our principals are required to observe and evaluate all teachers annually.

Shenandoah School Corporation believes that engaged parents (and community members) are essential to offering the best education to our students. Therefore, if a parent has a question about what their student is being taught, I would encourage you to first look at the IDOE State Standards or talk directly with your student's teacher. If you cannot find the information you are looking for, or have concerns that have not been addressed, then please contact the building principal. Finally, if you still have questions or concerns, please get in touch with Jake Wiese, Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment.
